The European Space Agency has released detailed views of this vast crater on Mars, which was also shown in the film ‘The Martian’
The European Space Agency’s (ESA) Mars Express mission has released a new and highly detailed video of an area of Mars that is also very famous for the film ‘The Martian’. In the film, this area was presented as the location where the main character is left alone on Mars.
The released video can be seen in detail of Schiaparelli Crater, which has a diameter of about 460 kilometers. Images obtained from Mars Express’s high-resolution camera, as well as elevation data related to the surface of Mars, were also used to prepare this video.
A 3D view of Schiaparelli Crater was created combining observations obtained at different times, which allows the surface structure and different parts of the area to be seen more clearly.
Scientists say that such detailed data helps to understand the formation of various landforms on the surface of Mars. In addition, this information can also be important in evaluating potential landing sites for future missions to Mars.
According to ESA, Schiaparelli Crater appears relatively shallow despite its large area. Experts believe that one reason for this may be that dust and dust carried the wind, particles deposited water or lava have filled part of the crater over billions of years.
